I am very excited to share with you a new book from Christian Schools International and Zondervan that is a great companion for you and for your students in your Bible teaching. The book is called The Story. The book comes in a full-length edition and a teen edition. For this blog posting, I am reviewing the latter.
The Story is the words of the Bible put into the form of one complete story or as the authors write, “Read the Bible as one seamless story from beginning to end.” The book contains the words of the Bible put into chronological order with the authors filling in the gaps to make the transitions. The words of the Bible are in standard text, and the words of the authors’ are put into italics. The reader can easily see what are the actual words of the Bible and what are the author’s words.
I believe this book can impact you and your students. In this post, I will write about the first reason I think you will find it beneficial. In the next few weeks, I will write about the others.
The first reason I know The Story will be a great companion for you and your students is the book recognizes that the Bible is a meta-narrative or one story of how God loves us and has a plan for our salvation from sin. Jesus is the main character where everything before His birth is preparing for arrival and everything after Jesus’ death is telling us how to “Live for Jesus.” The Story does not highlight individual stories from which to derive a moral like Aesop’s fables. I am not saying that deriving morals from the Bible is a bad thing, but the morals should not supplant the idea that the Bible is written to tell one story –God and His people.
In this post-modern world, students need to recognize that the power of the Word does not come from the truths that students find in it, but rather from Jesus. He is the Word. The Story strongly puts forward the central figure of the Bible is Jesus.
How do you think teaching the meta-narrative can benefit you and your students? I would love to hear your thoughts by emailing me firstname.lastname@example.org or by clicking on “comments” above the words of this post.
Keep checking the blog. In the next few weeks, I will continue my review of The Story.
